The city's metro rail corporation received final environmental clearance for the third phase of its network, a 42-kilometre extension connecting the airport to the city's fast-growing southern suburbs.

Construction is expected to begin within three months, with the first stretch targeted for completion in just under four years.

Officials said the extension is designed to cut current road travel time between the two ends of the route by more than half.
