An electric vehicle maker inaugurated its second gigafactory on the outskirts of Pune on Wednesday, a facility the company says will triple its annual battery pack capacity.

The plant is expected to employ over three thousand people once fully operational and will primarily supply packs for a mass-market electric hatchback the company plans to launch next year.

State officials at the inauguration pointed to the investment as part of a broader push to position the region as an electric vehicle manufacturing hub.
